God tells us to forgive seventy times seven and yet some of us keep worrying that he will tire of forgiving us, as if perhaps God were a hypocrite. Driven by infinite love, he passionately longs to keep on forgiving you and to lavish his mercy upon you for all eternity. Since this is God’s burning desire, propelling him to the extreme of the cross, we are wrong to ever beg him to forgive us, as if there were any reluctance within him to cleanse us. His is eager to forgive; his only reluctance is in giving signs and feelings to confirm our forgiveness. Doing so makes us spiritually vulnerable by fostering a dependence upon something that the Deceiver can easily replicate and manipulate. The devil cannot touch spiritual truth but he can toy with signs and feelings. Faith is our only shield; our sole protection against his trickery.
